Sixty three stripes of colour stretch across the facade of 1700 Kingsley Street. Each colour on the wall was contributed by a member of the Asbury Park community that was prompted to self assess their emotional state. Each contributor would rank themselves on two sliders. From how unpleasant to pleasant and calm to energetic on a scale from 0 to 10 for each. They would then choose any emotion from a list that best described how they were feeling. Lastly, they would pick a hue and shade of a colour that best exemplified how they were feeling.
The plotting of each submission is based on the two scales of emotions. The colors furthest to the right are individuals who indicated that they were the most pleasant and energetic. On the opposite side of the wall is the reverse, the calmest and most unpleasant.
It’s the hope of the artist that this mural remains a snapshot into the state of the mind of those in the community at this time.
Origin of the project
Zachary Manning has been using colours to track his emotional state of mind since January 1, 2018. He shares his colors monthly and are displayed chronologically. This project inspired his academic research into the Emotional Association of Colors where participants in the study were presented a similar survey to the one that was used in the Asbury Park mural.
Public participation has become the next step in the evolution of the Life in Colour project. Please follow @zmanning.design and @a.life.in.colour for details into any updates on future projects.
