Research

We conducted a vast amount of desk research on the industry and ethnography apps that study how users conduct themselves on social media.

We conducted our own survey to ask specific questions on influence and social media use in general.

Results from the survey and interviews helped us shape personas.

Defining Users

Filtering through all the information we gathered we were able to group social media users into these six categories.

These conclusions would show themselves as a user progressed through the app.

Calculating Influence

To measure influence of users I first thought that an equation could be developed from Instagram data that users could upload.

Initially I thought it best to compare influence of topics determined by Instagram. We later learned that this info is not exported by Instagram and instead opted for a general influence.

Neural Network

I opted to calculate influence via a neural network. I defined the input values as mutualFollowers, likes, seenContent, and totalPostSeen.

Originally the output was set to a yes or no percentage as can be seen in the model. At the conclusion of the project I experimented with an output that would yield a percentage. Either output approach however would require a larger number of training data to be effective.

Visuals

I opted for the font, Inter, as I wanted to emulate the sleek san serif typeface choices of the tech giants. The heart aligned to the top of the capital U was designed to look like it was being held by two outstretched hands. A symbolic representation of the mission of this app to care for one’s data.

Final Output

We opted to create fun illustrations to be paired with tasks and outputs. Each of these illustrations is animated to add an extra layer of interest.

The purple, yellow color palette is high in contrast and the black outline of ux elements ties into the illustrations.

To recap we had three goals:

Understand your visual influences: Through a visual test yielding in a defined user understanding

Understand your user type: Through questions in a quiz yielding in a defined user type

Understand influence of individuals: Through AI we analyze submitted Instagram data
